Abstract

OPEIU was chartered by the American Federation of Labor in 1945, and from its inception, involved itself exclusively with the field of office employment, as a separate entity from industrial employment. Local 10 grew out of the Stenographers, Typists, Bookkeepers, and Assistants Union which was established in 1929. The records of OPEIU Local 10 reflect the organizing work of the local with many organizations in the metropolitan Detroit area.

History

OPEIU was chartered by the American Federation of Labor in 1945 and was an outgrowth of an organization called the International Council of Office Employees Unions which had been established in 1942. OPEIU's predecessor name was Office Employees International Union (OEIU). From its inception, the OPEIU has involved itself exclusively with the field of office employment — as a separate entity from industrial employment. Local Ten's predecessor union from 1929 to 1945 was the Stenographers, Typists, Bookkeepers and Assistants Union No. 16812. The union affiliated itself with OEIU in 1945, and Local 10 was established. The Union changed its name to Office and Professional Employees International Union in 1966.
