Approximately one-third of the papers consists of news clippings relating to the local's activities but also to education and teaching in general. Approximately one-fourth of the collection relates to grievances and arbitration processes. Also included are papers relating to the union's constitution, contracts, collective bargaining, legal and financial matters, elections, and miscellaneous subjects. Emphasized are issues of school busing for integration and teacher residency requirements.

History
The Springfield Federation of Teachers is located in Springfield, Massachusetts. Organized in 1937, its jurisdiction extends over the City of Springfield. The papers included in this collection are primarily those generated by the union's executive board; particularly presidents James Belhumeur and Martin Manoogian and the Federation's recording secretaries. The activities covered are primarily those of Local #484 in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts but also encompass unionization in general and of teachers in particular, political participation, and national concerns such as busing for integration.

Arranged in 1 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-4). Folders are arranged alphabetically.
Acquisition
The papers of the Springfield Federation of Teachers, Local #484, American Federation of Teachers, were deposited with the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in 1996.
Transfers
pproximately 30 photographs received with the collection have been transferred to the Archives Audiovisual Department. These relate to the annual conventions of the American Federation of Teachers. Others are of individual teachers and/or administrators of the Springfield Federation of Teachers.
