Abstract

AFSCME Local 496 was established in December 1970 in Flint, Michigan. It was composed of maintenance, custodial, and clerical employees of Genesee County and was under the jurisdiction of AFSCME Flint Metro Area Council 29. Local 496's first president was Christine Daros, and its first secretary-treasurer was David Barkey. The records in the collection consist of routine office files reflecting the activities of Local 496; council and international convention materials; per capita payments to the International; and membership and payroll information.

History

AFSCME Local 496 was established in December, 1970 in Flint, Michigan. It was composed of maintenance, custodial and clerical employees of Genesee County and was under the jurisdiction of the Flint Metro Area Council 29. Council 29 is now part of Michigan Council 25.

The local had approximately 20 members originally, but by 1983 had expanded to several hundred. Its first president was Christine Daros and its first secretary-treasurer was David Barkey, who served until 1983.

Arrangement

Arranged in 3 series – Series 1 (Box 1), Series 2 (Box 2) and Series 3 (Boxes 2-3, oversize book). Folders are arranged alphabetically.

Acquisition

The papers of AFSCME Local 496, Genesee County, Michigan, were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in June of 1983 by David Barkey, secretary-treasurer of the local.
