Series Description: Series I, Union Files, 1947: Business and personal correspondence, flyers, newsletters and grievances relating to Mr. White's work for the United Postal Workers Association (CIO) Local 261 and the Service Employees International Union Local 79.

Series II, Grievance Hearings 1963-1976: Files from grievance hearings over which Mr. White presided or in which he represented the grievant.

Series III, Health Advisory Groups, 1983-1986: Minutes, proposals, and newsletters documenting the work of the Oakland County Health Planning - Subarea Advisory Council and the Comprehensive Health Planning Council of Southeastern Michigan.

Abstract

A member of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 79, Ernest White worked as a postal employee arbitrator and served as member of the Comprehensive Health Planning Council of Southeastern Michigan. Mr. White’s papers reflect his work with the United Postal Service, the SEIU Local 79, and as a health advisory group member of Oakland County.

History

Mr. White worked for the United States Postal Service and was president of the United Postal Workers Association (CIO) Local 261 in 1947. He was a foreman at the Roosevelt Annex and subsequently became a grievance hearing officer in 1963. He later became a mini banker for the Hazel Park Racing Association and a member of the Service Employees International Union.

In addition to his work for the United States Postal Service, Mr. White served the federal government as a member of the Federal Executive Board Management Improvement/Intergovernmental Relations Committee. He also served his local community as a member of the Comprehensive Health Planning Council of Southeastern Michigan.

Acquisition

The papers of Ernest J. White were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs on November 7, 1986 and were opened for research in the spring of 1992.
