Scope and Content

From the Collection: The ALPA Publications is a collection of pamphlets, newsletters, magazines, bulletins, manuals, constitutions and by-laws, arbitration transcripts, and research reports produced by, or involving ALPA from 1933-2006. ALPA’s main publication, Air Line Pilot, is still in print and so not included here, but both ALPA national, and individual Master Executive Councils (MEC) also produced a wide variety of publications during the past 80 years which are included in this collection.

The ALPA News Bulletin, later changed to ALPA Information Bulletin, 1949-1969, was a bi-weekly and later weekly publication for members to keep them up to date on issues in-between the monthly publications. ALPA also published other monthly newsletters for members such as the Pilot Bulletin and the Pilot Report, both from the 1970s. Tech Talk, 1953-57, was a publication that dealt with technical subjects, and safety issues and was produced monthly by the Engineering and Air Safety department. The Steward and Stewardess Division (S and S Division) also published monthly newsletters, S and S Division News, and S and S Shop Talk which focused on safety issues, both 1963-68.

This collection also includes various airline-specific publications. Delta’s MEC published The Widget semi-monthly, and is represented in this collection from 1991 to 2006. Trans World Airlines also had a number of publications ranging from 1957-1971. Two were from the MEC: Flight Forum, and The Lancet, both monthly, and two from the airline: Skyliner which was bi-weekly for all employees, and Flite Facts, published monthly from the Flight Operations Department. Lastly United Airlines MEC’s publication, The Leading Edge, is also included here from 1993 to 2002.

In addition, this collection includes ALPA Constitutions and By-laws, 1933-1970; Policy Manuals, 1960s; Pilot wages and working conditions studies, 1930s; pamphlets and guides, 1940s-70s; as well as U.S. Emergency Board hearings and National Mediation Board hearings, 1951-62.
