Abstract Merle Henrickson served as president of United Public Workers Local 275 of Detroit in the late 1940's. From the 1940s through the 1980s, he was involved with the neighborhood and community councils of Detroit, particularly the Brightmoor District Council. He was a major figure in the citizen movement to improve public schools in Detroit and as such, he was deeply involved in school desegregation in the 1970s.
